Costa Maya, Mexico

7 AM – 3 PM is our time here in Costa Maya. We left the ship by 7:15 and set off on our walk to meet our Native Choice tour guide for our visit to the Chacchoben Ruins. We were the first to check in so after getting our wrist band we visited a shop there and got some water to take with us. We took two vans approximately 45 miles to the ruins. Once we arrived we were given a few “Mexican minutes” to visit the rest room and then went on our guided tour of the ruins, led by George. The ruins are relatively new, only open to the public for the last four years. George had wonderful history of the Mayan calendar and the pyramids, the motivation behind the building and the way in which the more educated people would manipulate the ‘commoners’ with their knowledge of the sun rising / setting and many other things.

I couldn’t help but think of my niece Emily and her interest in history and work as a high school history teacher and how much she would enjoy visiting here. Maybe one day we’ll be able to all go on a vacation together and visit something similar. At the end of the tour we had a few minutes to look around and then boarded a bus to head back to Costa Maya. Now, I must admit, our transportation to the site and returning were vastly different. Our van there was quite new and our driver exceeded the speed limit almost the entire way. On the return, I’m not sure if our bus was able to even go the speed limit and we had to stop once for the driver to take out his tools to work on the seal on the door, the a/c had to struggle to work and I truly wasn’t sure we’d ever get back. But we did, and all was well, we did some shopping and walked back to the port.

We had heard that many people never even leave the port area in Costa Maya. They’ve developed the whole area with tons of shops and in the middle a large pool area with a swim-up bar, other restaurants and a small beach area. I could see why many would be tempted to just stay here for the day.

I headed back to the ship while LJ finished up with some photos and shopping. My first stop: shower.. then… you guessed it! Nap… reading…. LJ to the gym… and time for dinner. The show tonight was the Carnival dancers and singers and was very good. I was done for the night. LJ went to turn in our raffle tickets for a drawing in the casino and to see if he could have any luck at Blackjack. He quickly returned with a sad face…2.1268694918.towel-animal---monkey
