Whale of a Tail!

This morning we were booked with Harv & Marv for whale watching. We went with them in 2009 and loved it, it’s a small six person boat and LJ had read about one of the guys daughters, Jayleen, who just became a captain this season and is 19 so he had requested her. She also does photography and she and her dad have photos in a book about Alaska’s whales. We had one other person join us, Jane from Illinois. She works for a software company that just sold software to the State of Alaska for birth, marriage and death certificates and she was here doing a Train-the-Trainer this coming week. We went about fifteen miles out and saw lots of humpbacks.

We did have one breech and also do some pectoral fin slaps on the water but no full breeches like last time, which seem to be fairly rare. The water was somewhat rough but it was still amazing and we really enjoyed it. On the way back to the ship we stopped at Mendenhall Glacier for some photos and then also at a river bed where the salmon were coming in. It was amazing to see them so thick in the river and in such a shallow amount of water just jumping and trying to move upstream. Then we also made a brief stop at the fish hatchery which was completely full of fish.

We came back to the ship, ate lunch with Larry and Claire and then we actually headed back out to do a second whale watch with Harv & Marv. LJ booked it as we were driving out this morning for our first one. This afternoon we were with Jayleen’s father, Jay. The weather was much calmer and we got to see just as many, if not more, humpbacks. They did lots of diving and we got to see lots of whale tails which is always cool.
