LJ and I had planned on a duck tour this morning in Ketchikan but between leg cramps after he got and a very unhappy stomach, we just stayed in until time to head out with Numie.
It was very rainy in Ketchikan and we all donned our rain coats before heading outside. We had reservations for the Lumberjack Show today and after picking up our tickets from Will Call we headed over to show Numie the famous Creek Street and see if there were salmon running in the stream there. We found salmon – both alive and dead and lots of birds feasting. LJ gave Numie a history lesson on Creek Street and it’s risqué past and then we headed off to the show.
The audience is divided up into two teams, Canada vs the USA and jeering, booing, hissing is encouraged against the other team. There was ax throwing, log chopping, log climbing, log rolling in the water and more, with lots of humor and fun thrown in as well. Numie sat up in the stands underneath a heater mounted across the ceiling, after about a minute we both knew I couldn’t stay with her there so I moved back down to the rainy mist of the second row with LJ – much more comfortable! We enjoyed the show but when Mom came down from her seat and I asked how she liked it, she just replied “it was alright”. What??? She said it just reminded her too much of work she had done through her life and she felt that it was all planned – she enjoyed Daddy and Connel’s antics much better when they worked in wood.
After the show we did a little shopping and then went to see the famous rain gauge and “Welcome to Ketchikan” sign for some photo ops.
Then… back to the ship to get ready for dinner!
LJ still wasn’t feeling all that great so after dinner Mom and I went to the show. It was the ship singers and dancers performing a Boogie Wonderland. They were quite talented but not exactly Numie’s cup of tea so we didn’t stay for the entire show. Tomorrow is a day at sea so no alarm clocks to be set! Numie’s excited!
