A beautiful day on the Middle Kenai

Today’s fishing was on the Middle Kenai for silver salmon and rainbow trout. Hunter was our guide. It’s his second season here in Alaska, he’s from Oregon and will go back there after the season is over.

We also had two guys with us from Texas. They were part of a group of six college friends who were up on a trip together. The other four were in Aaron’s boat today.

It was an absolutely gorgeous day on the river. We started out in search of silver salmon for a couple of hours but unfortunately the “lockjaw” prediction was true. LJ did get one (first pic below) but it was already too far into the spawning process so not one to keep. He also got other pinks or “humpy’s” (middle pics) and a sockeye salmon (last pic below). Then we moved on to rainbow trout.

We packed our lunches to have on the river and LJ had worked up quite the appetite with all his crazy fish! LJ did send up Morty the drone during the trip. Moving on a pretty swift river presented some fun challenges for LJ the drone pilot, but he did an amazing mid-air catch during Morty’s landing. More to come on the footage once we return home.

The river is quite fast so for rainbows, we were bobber fishing, all in a line about five’ish feet apart and then Hunter would pace the boat as we floated down, he was managing the boat, giving us instructions on where to cast and then watching our lines as well. We kept him quite busy! Unfortunately, no luck on the rainbows but still an amazing day on the river.

We headed home to change and then went out on an adventure. We ended up at Rocky’s Cafe for ice cream as our dinner. Rocky’s has a cafe, convenience store and even DVD rentals!

After “dinner” we headed out for our Moose hunt of the evening and we hit the jackpot!

We ended the day at one of the parks that has an amazing view of the Cook Inlet and a beautiful sunset.
